Maze Land, also known as Maze Museum, is a park containing the world’s longest stone-wall maze, themed around the three things Jeju Island is said to have in abundance: wind, water, and women. The founder of the park began landscaping by planting trees in the 1970s with the fervent wish of creating a retreat that could provide joy and happiness to as many people as possible. Over time, those trees grew large enough to form a forest, and Maze Land was born.
The Maze of Stone is shaped like a Dolhareubang, the statues found throughout Jeju Island; the Maze of Women depicts a haenyeo (female diver) returning home after diving; while the Maze of Wind mimics a typhoon, inspired by the labyrinth on the island of Crete, Greece. Fences are lined with Western thuja trees emitting phytoncides, allowing visitors to enjoy clean air. The Stone Maze represents a lying Dol Hareubang (stone grandfather). About 100,000 basalt stones were used to build stone walls recreating the Jeju Olle Trail, and the top layer of the walls is finished with volcanic scoria to maximize the release of far-infrared anions.
The Maze of Women, which depicts a haenyeo returning from the sea, is filled with bright red blooming camellias in winter, creating extra points of visual interest to enjoy while navigating it. The Labyrinth of Light is a space designed to circle the center with no forks, decorated with numerous LED lights. A map is provided, allowing it to be easily navigated with little chance of getting lost.
Maze Land is also home to numerous other attractions besides its mazes. Foremost is a long walking trail named Aejian, which combines the words for “branch” and “connecting,” symbolizing a lovely forest path that connects nature with people and people with each other. It passes by numerous cypress and Castanopsis trees. Hidden spots along the trail include the Labyrinth of Light, Jeju Mythological Sculpture Garden, and Bamboo Forest. The Harmony Garden is a living garden where visitors can enjoy the sights and sounds of nature, featuring various species of trees and flowers.
Their Four Seasons Flower Garden grows flowers to enjoy in every different season, with canola flowers, tulips, roses, and lupines in spring; cockscombs and marigolds in summer; asters, pink muhly grass, and cosmos in autumn; and camellias in winter.
The Maze Puzzle Museum is also full of things to see and do themed around a number of unique concepts, including a video gallery, puzzle exhibition hall, and Minotaur Gallery.
What makes this place extra special is that it strives to be an inclusive institution that serves as a space of sharing and consideration for people with disabilities, seniors, and locals, based on the founder’s philosophy of “creating something with the marginalized.”
