UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Jeju, loved and known the world over as an island of natural beauty, is a volcanic landform created by an eruption. It not only has great scenery, but also great geological significance. It has over 360 oreums (parasitic cones) and 160 lava tubes, and the entire island was designated as a biosphere reserve in 2002. Mt Halla, Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, and the Geomun Oreum lava tube systems were listed as World Natural Heritage sites in 2007, and certified as a Global Geopark in 2010 making it the only place in the world to have achieved three UNESCO natural science certificates. In addition, Jeju’s unique fishing culture, ‘Jeju Haenyeo (Fisherwomen diver)’, and its ‘Chilmeoridang Yeongdeunggut Shamanic Ritual’, through which prayers are offered for the safety of the haenyeo, a prosperous year, and a large catch, have been recognized by being registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
A Proud Record of UNESCO Designations
UNESCO designated Jeju a Biosphere Reserve in 2002, a World Natural Heritage site in 2007, and it received Global Geopark Network certification in 2010. It is a trifecta unique in the world.
World Heritage Festival Special Expedition
The World Heritage Festival allowed a temporary exploration of closed courses that were not open to the public, providing an opportunity for visitors to see some world-recognized secrets of Jeju.
