Man's aspiration to know the universe is not just an imaginary story. The universe, whose mysteries are still slowly being unveiled, is a mystery itself that requires endless challenges and exploration. The Jeju Aerospace Museum inspires endless imagination into those who dream of aviation technology and space. Imagine all the challenges humans have taken on in their quest to go into space, ranging from the Wright brothers’ dream of flying through the sky, to building a whole future planet in space.

If you’re interested in aviation, don’t miss the aviation history hall on the ground floor. The exhibits hanging in the Air Hall are actual aircrafts that once flew through the sky. In addition to the large exhibition, visitors can also see the Phantom fighter jets that defended the Korean territory in the past. The air simulators and drone-experience game consoles are so popular that people stand in long lines to try them out. Visitors can also experience making their own pilot avatar. How Things Fly is a special educational experience space made in collaboration with the United States’ Smithsonian, the world’s largest museum. You can learn about various flight principles as well as aviation skills that changed the world.

The 1st floor is the Astronomical Space Museum. Here, the history of space exploration and numerous achievements of mankind from the past to the future are displayed. Look for your constellation on a screen filled with stars, and create a space passport and an avatar to travel to future planets. The Theme Hall is also a must-see. The Polaris Hall screens 5D videos that combine three-dimensional images and effects on a 360-degree panoramic screen. Visitors can create their own alien at Procyon after completing the space exploration at the Canopus (dome theater). Show off your space science knowledge at Aries, which was built in collaboration with the Russian Academy of Sciences. Experience leaving the earth in a rocket using the astronaut’s gravity acceleration device, as well as augmented reality in the Lightning Race.  The museum offers the Children’s Experience Zone, a space-themed playground, for toddlers.

Enlightened by lightningLightning Museum
테마 호기심여행자-번개과학관 2

What is the principle behind lightning? How are clouds formed? If you want to know the scientific principles of natural phenomena, the Lightning Museum is the place to go. Follow Zinnie, a space scientist, and adorable Donny, who represents Jeju Island, through the science museum. By the time you leave, you’ll understand a lot more about lightning and energy. Even the most difficult scientific theories are easily explained via the Docent program.

The Lightning Museum has many facilities for experiencing and learning. One of them is the Van de Graaff generator, which creates static electricity using friction. Place your hands on the shiny silver sphere, and static electricity will flow through your body, causing your hair to stand up. Be amazed by the amazing, magical principles of science. Plasma balls, which look like colored aurora in a sphere, never fail to surprise visitors. When you lay your finger on the glass sphere, a thin light comes out like a laser beam. More than 99 percent of the materials in the universe are said to be in plasma state, meaning that this small glass sphere itself is a tiny universe. The Lightning Tunnel is a place where you can vividly experience thunder and lightning inside a shower cloud. The thunderous sound and flashing lightning are mesmerizing and make you forget where you are. The Lightning Music Show—the highlight of the Lightning Museum—is an absolute must-see. This concert of Lightning, a combination of flames and sounds made from Tesla coils, is a Lightning Museum-exclusive special stage.

There is an exciting experience site just outside the museum. The Wind 1947 Cart Experience Center is just around the corner. The Wind 1947 boasts a beautifully stretched out view of Hallasan Mountain, as well as the longest cart track (1,947m) in Korea.

The place to learn about traditional culture and nature of JejuJeju Folklore & Natural History Museum
테마 호기심여행자-민속자연사박물관 7

The Jeju Folklore & Natural History Museum is a place where you can learn about and understand the traditional culture and natural environment that the Jeju people have been protecting and maintaining for a long time. Because there are so many interesting things to see, it is recommended that you set aside enough time for your visit. The museum is conveniently located near Samseonghyeol, the birthplace of the myth of Jeju. You might want to visit it before or after the museum tour.

The exhibition halls are divided into Jeju Sangjing Hall, Natural History Exhibition Hall, Folklore Exhibition Hall, and Sea Exhibition Hall. The Jeju Sangjing Hall, which is directly connected to the entrance of the museum, offers an opportunity to learn about the birth of Jeju and its various tales. The exhibition of the life-size Sangalchi, a legendary creature that supposedly lived half in the mountains and half in the sea, also attracts many visitors. The Natural History Exhibition Hall displays a variety of animal and plant specimens, as well as rocks and volcanic eruption evidence from Jeju Island. Also, the ecosystem of Jeju is shown as a diorama, making it much more realistic and vivid. Visitors gain vivid knowledge from the animation showing how Jeju Island was created, detailing Jeju’s unique geology and natural ecology such as oreum, caves, and gotjawal forest.

The Folklore Exhibition Hall, which displays recreations of Jeju's traditions and lifestyle, might be interesting for first-time travelers to Jeju Island. Here, visitors can learn about the old days of Jeju in a short period of time. The life-size Teu, and other unfamiliar parts of traditional culture, such as house structures and lifestyle, are different from the mainland and catch the visitor’s eye. A recreation of Yeongdeunggut, part of the important traditional culture of Jeju Island, is also worth seeing. Jeju people believe that the Yeongdeung Halmang roams the island in early spring, sowing grain and seafood seeds, and then leaves through Udo. Even today, Yeongdeunggut is still held in every village along the coast. Visitors can learn about the wisdom of the ancestors of Jeju Island by examining their everyday utilities such as the Aegiguduk (traditional baby crib), Mulheobeok (traditional water jar), and Galot (traditional clothing dyed with persimmon).

History of Exile in JejuChusa Hall
테마 호기심여행자-추사관 10

Jeju Island is a beautiful place with mystical nature and scenic beauty. Although it’s now loved as the best destination for travel, Jeju Island used to be a notorious exile site and was shunned by everyone during the Joseon Dynasty. In the old days, farming and fishing technologies were not developed and drinking water was scarce, making this island a very difficult environment for people to live. Also, the fact that it is hard to escape from Jeju because the island is located in the middle of the sea, also added to its popularity as a place for exile. As a result, Jeju Island became a land of tears where those convicted of felony or involved in political dispute were deported from the mainland. Behind the island’s beautiful scenery lies the history of the exiles who suffered sorrow and hardship.

Chusa Kim Jeong-hui was in exiled to Jeju for about nine years after being involved in the 1840 death of Yoon Sang-do in prison. The Chusa Hall in Daejeong-eup has a collection of Kim’s records and traces while he was in exile. Also, the thatched cottage where he lived in those years still stands, restored to how it looked when he lived there. The Chusa Hall displays signboard letters written by Kim Jung-hee, and letters sent to his wife and acquaintances. These letters tell of his life of exile in detail, which is a valuable source of insight into the life of exiles at that time. Despite his exhausting life in exile, he managed himself strictly, completing the “Chusa handwriting” and painting the famous Sehando (National Treasure No. 180). During the tour, you’ll be reminded of Kim Jung-hee and numerous people who were deported to Jeju Island. There are many historical figures among those who were exiled to Jeju Island. Jeju Island was also the last exile place for Gwanghaegun, the former king who was dethroned by King Injo. Gwanghaegun, locked up in a tiny cottage enclosed in a thorn hedge,  lived until the end of his turbulent life in Jeju Island. Wooam Song Si-yeol was also exiled to Jeju Island, and was killed by poison on his way to Seoul.

Everything You Need to Know about MandarinsJeju Agricultural Ecology Institute of Seogwipo Agricultural Technology Center
테마 호기심여행자-서귀포농업기술센터 2

The Jeju Agricultural Ecology Institute of Seogwipo Agricultural Technology Center, which is located in a hilly and mountainous area in Seogwipo, is a place that has all the answers for your questions about mandarins. Standing on a vast land, the center consists of the Jeju Mandarin Promotion Hall, the Mandarin Breed Exhibition Hall, the Mandarin Forest Road, and the Mandarin Harvesting Experience Center.

The Mandarin Promotion Hall, modeled after the scarlet mandarin, is divided into the ground floor and 1st floor. On the ground floor, you can learn about the breeds and characteristics of mandarins through a simple quiz and find recipes that use mandarins. Your journey to explore the world of mandarins begins on the first floor. Learn about the hidden history of mandarins, which were once given as gifts for the king and caused hardship for farmers during the Joseon Dynasty. They were known as the “college tree” in the 1970s—they generated so much revenue that farmers were able to fund their children’s university fees with those earnings. Gain insight about various mandarin growing environments according to the soil of Jeju Island, as well as the current distribution of mandarins worldwide. Most of the learning materials are interactive media, which are fun for solo travelers, too.

The Mandarin Promotion Hall could be viewed as an introductory space, whereas the mandarin Breed Exhibition Hall, built in an outdoor greenhouse, is a place to review what you’ve learned. Various mandarin trees from all over the world grow in the greenhouse, and there are many interesting breeds to see. In particular, Banpeiyu (Pomelo), a breed rather unfamiliar to us, is as big as a baby's face. This surprises anyone the first time they ever see it. The mandarin harvesting experience could be viewed as an on-site practice. Every year, the Jeju Agricultural Ecology Institute holds an annual mandarin harvesting event. This year’s event runs from November 8 to 23. Admission is KRW 3,000 per person. Participants may take up to 1 kilogram of mandarins harvested after sampling as much as they want. You can also explore the Green Tea Maze and see the wetlands.
