Festival of 1.2 Million Jeju People, Tamna Culture Festival

Under the goal of finding and restoring the culture of “Tamna,” which is an old name for Jeju, this festival shows Jeju’s history, cultural heritage, and arts. This festival is the Jeju people’s way of sharing their culture with the world, and it can be considered “Jeju assorted culture set.” Started as Jeju Arts Festival in 1962, the festival changed its name again in 1965 to the 4th Halla Culture Festival, becoming a general culture festival, and finally became the Tamna Festival in 2002.

This festival is for the 1.2 million Jeju people who have inherited and are sharing the spirit of the Tamna people. It is a venue for meaningful communication between children and grown-ups, residents and visitors, and amateur artists and professional artists. For 5 days, people can enjoy feasts and experience culture in the Origin Festival, Jeju Culture Masquerade Festival, Jeju Culture Festival, Participation Culture Festival, and other events.

There will be Geolgung (farmers’ performance) in the Marine Tower, Buksugu Plaza, and Sanjismul Park, as well as a folklore arts contest, demonstration event to showcase Invisible Cultural Heritage, Jeju language festival, and youth contest in Tamna Culture Plaza.

Never Miss This at Tamna Culture Festival

Geolgung and Folklore Arts Contest

Geolgung, a form of pungmulgut (farmers’ performance), is an activity in which villagers wander the village, playing music and displaying their many talents to collect money and grain in return, when the village needs special expenses for a public purpose. The Folklore Arts Contest modernizes the old customs in each region for today’s world. Now, people can see folklore arts with all the charm of their regional characteristics.

Demonstration Event to Showcase Invisible Cultural Heritage

People can see and experience the state-designated Important Invisible Cultural Heritage (Godil (making a Korean hat), Manggeonjang (making a headband made of horsehair or a master who makes it) and Tanggoenjang (making a horsehair inner cap or a master who makes it)) and Jeju-designated Invisible Cultural Heritage (Jejukeungut (folk performance), Jejudo Onggijang (a master who makes earthenware), Seongeup-ri Chogajang Omegi wine and Gosori wine, a brim of a Korean hat and Jeongdong Beollipjang (a headgear), which people usually can’t see easily, in one place.
