As you travel by bus along the coastal road which encompasses Jeju Island, you can calmly and safely enjoy just looking out the window and marvelling at the must-see sites along the route.​​ Places in the southeast like the famed Seopjikoji coastline and its many filming locations, the 200-meter cliff at Namwon and of course, the iconic Oedolgae rock, all which are just waiting to be discovered!

    Journey southeast on bus 201

    As you travel by bus along the coastal road which encompasses Jeju Island, you can calmly and safely enjoy just looking out the window and marvelling at the must-see sites along the route. Places like the famed Seopjikoji coastline and its many filming locations, the 200-meter cliff at Namwon and of course, the iconic Oedolgae rock, all which are just waiting to be discovered! Here is an itinerary for the bus 201 route (formerly bus 701).



    First stop:

    Seopjikoji


    Seopjikoji, which is located at the east coast of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, is a beautiful coastline filled with canola flowers during the spring, with Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak rising up in the background. You can find Sinyang Sandy Beach at the entrance, while the end will let you see the traditional beauties of Jeju, such as a vast land filled with canola flowers growing on a hill, Jeju ponies grazing peacefully, beautiful rocky cliffs, and the legendary Seonbawi Rock standing in the middle of the ocean.



    What makes Seopjikoji different from other coastal areas of Jeju Island is that it is made of red volcanic ash called “scoria.” It has a number of unique rock formations that only show themselves when the tide is low. It is the filming location of such movies and TV dramas as “The Legend of Gingko,” “The Uprising,” “Cheonilya,” and “All In.” The picturesque blue house by the sea where Choi Jin-sil lived in the movie “The Legend of Gingko” was based on this site. For this reason, this spot is extremely popular with visitors.


    More recently, a number of iconic buildings by famous architects have been constructed in and around Seopjikoji, including the “Glass House” and “Genius Loci” of Ando Tadao. These remarkable structures stand in good company with the majestic UNESCO World Natural Heritage site of Seongsan Sunrise Peak in the distance.

    Bus From Seogwipo Bus Terminal take bus 201 and get off at the Sinyang-ri entrance bus stop. From there, you need to walk another 50 minutes or so to reach the Seopjikoji coast. Total travel time is approximately 2 and a half hours by bus.

    Second stop:

    Namwon Keuneong


    Eongi means hill in the Jeju language. Namwon Keuneong gets its name from the fact that there is a huge rock that looks like it is opening its mouth to swallow the entire sea. The 200-meter coastal cliff is made of lava chunks that resemble a turtle’s shell. The grass here is soft, cozy, and lush, while the sound of waves crashing onto the massive rocks is sure to refresh the heart and mind of any visitor. Motorboats can be seen racing on the vast ocean and it is a popular fishing spot, a relaxing resting place, and a date spot. Jeju Olle walking trail No. 5 is along here as well.

    Third stop:

    Hwanguji Coast


    There is a cave along the south coast called ‘Hwangujigul Cave’ or ‘Yeoldugul Cave.’ It is actually an artificial cave that Japanese forces made during World War 2 in order to hide torpedo boats in case of an American attack. There are 12 caves in total and it is a valuable historic monument. But despite the sad history, it’s still a beautiful swimming and snorkeling spot and the ocean view near the cave is spectacular. So bring your ocean gear and sunscreen and enjoy some time in Jeju’s genuine outdoor paradise!

    Fourth stop:

    Oedolgae


    After standing, waiting for centuries along Jeju’s south coast, the 20-meter-tall sea stack (it was carved away from the softer surrounding cliff face by wave erosion) some 2 kilometers from Seogwipo City is hard to miss — and has an unforgettable backstory as well. Oedolgae is said to be named for its lonely location. However, there is also a legend that says that the rock is actually a grandmother who transformed into a rock after waiting for her husband to return from fishing.

    The area’s promenade is covered with sidewalks and wooden decks that make it easy for visitors to walk and explore the coastline and pine forest there. These beautiful coastal cliffs are therefore always crowded, regardless of the season. But if you visit at sunset, you can see some truly beautiful marine scenery in a relatively peaceful, quiet setting of sheer cliffs and panoramic views.

    Fifth stop:
    Dombenanggol


    This coastal route, along the very popular Jeju Olle walking trail No. 7, boast of cliffs and a vast ocean view seen at a single glance. It was named dombe (“cutting board” in the Jeju language) because it has an abundance of leaves that look like cutting boards. It is famous for its bizarrely shaped rock cliffs and basalt formations. The spot is also famous for its clean spring water and was once a source of drinking water for local villagers. The path has a great deal to admire and explore, so put it on your bus journey itinerary!
