Staying active in winterWinter Jeju, Thrilling Activities

When traveling to Jeju Island, activities are a must! Don’t be discouraged during the cooler months, because there are still many activities perfect for cold weather. The following will help you to uncover Jeju Island’s beautiful scenery during winter, while having fun too!

Stretch your legs on the Treasure of Jeju, Hallasan MountainSnowflake Mountain Trekking

Formed by volcanic lava flows, Hallasan Mountain is the highest mountain in South Korea at 1,950 meters. It is found at the heart of Jeju Island. In the winter, the snow white scenery is gorgeous.
There are 7 climbing routes categorized by level, distance and time. The Eorimok trail, Yeongsil trail and Witse Oreum volcanic cone are the most suitable routes to hike in winter and for beginners.
During winter, the Eorimok trail consists of a layer of snow covering the entire path but it is the beautiful white scenery that makes this an ideal trek. This terrain is flatter than the other trails but the view is refreshing and bright as the snow reflects the winter sunshine. The Eorimok trail starts at the Hallasan Mountain National Park Visitor Information Center (970 meters above sea level) and then passes along Sajebi Dongsan (at the 2.4 km mark) and Manse Dongsan (at the 4.7 km mark) to Witse Oreum (at the 6.8 km mark).
Hiking Hallasan Mountain always provides beautiful sights, but hiking in winter is something else. It provides enchanting winter wonderland views and photos don’t do it justice, it is surreal! Triumph over the mountain and reach the top to reward yourself with views of the hidden crater lake called ‘Baekrokdam’.
Bringing a disposable lunch box is prohibited in order to protect a mountain but gimbap (sushi roll) or a hamburger is allowed. Check the climbing time on the website because it varies according to the weather.
If you intend to hike on Hallasan Mountain, please observe these safety precautions: Only climb if you are physically fit and healthy. Be cautious of your footing. Wear appropriate clothing and have the proper equipment (boots, gloves, crampons, stick). Alcohol consumption is prohibited before and during trekking. Please bring water! It is not safe to drink water found on the mountain. Protective equipment is available for hire. Remember to bring food, a map of the area, a flashlight and a camera.

    O share (오쉐어)

If you don’t have proper equipment for hiking and climbing, don’t worry! Equipment is available for hire near Jeju International Airport (only a 5-minute walk). Combined items (sets) are cheaper than each item, prices mentioned below:
Fees: Hiking stick: 7,000 won per day. Hiking shoes: 7,000 won per day. Hiking gloves: 3,000 won per day. Hiking bag: 4,000 won per day. Crampons: 5,000 won per day. Hiking socks: 3,000 won for purchase.
