Unique, traditional flavors of Jeju cuisine

별점(별점없음)

There are differences in traditional food of the mainland and Jeju. Jeju developed its own food history because of its unique natural environment and socio-cultural background. As an island, Jeju is surrounded by the sea so it has a variety of seafood for all seasons and using various cooking methods. Jeju is a volcanic island, with sandy soil and basalt rock, so growing rice here is impossible. As a result, other different kinds of grains were used as ingredients. These include beans, buckwheat, barley, and so on. Fresh vegetables are easy to grow in the warm climate, so there are fewer uses of preserved foods here. For those food lovers who would like to experience Korean cuisine, Jeju’s traditional food will be definitely be a highlight of your trip to the island.

Sahyungje Hoejip (사형제횟집)

Very well-known in Jeju, Sahyungje Hoejip used to be in front of Hallim Port but recently relocated to the inland area. They sell live fish and mackerel sashimi, and most tourists choose the latter. Put some rice over laver, dip a piece of sashimi in sauce, and eat them together to satisfy your taste buds. The rich and chewy texture turns aromatic and sweet, the more you chew it. Their secret? The mackerel is aged for 6 hours in cornelian cherries that the owners’ parents send from Gurye, Jeollanam-do before sliced up into sashimi.

Jeju has been famous for abalone (“jeonbok”) since ancient times and its harvest has not only sustained the economy, but infused the local cuisine.
