Jeju LAF Light Art Flash showcases artworks made with light. When darkness falls, the vast land beneath the foot of Hallasan Mountain turns into a gallery of lights that allure visitors. Participating artists play creatively with lights, turning their brilliant imagination into fantastic artworks. These artworks placed between light and darkness each evoke different emotions and inspiration. In this feast of light made by world-class artists, Jeju’s night becomes more exciting than ever.
There are no rules for enjoying the Light Art Flash. Follow your heart and you’ll find yourself immersed in the world of art in no time. The Gallery of Lights leads straight into a natural cave, which feels otherworldly, like an outer space planet where you’ve made an emergency landing. In the dim light, you can see fingernail-sized ferns and character artworks that arouse peculiar emotions. This is <Limoland> by photographer and art collector Jean Pigozzi that tells the story of Mr Limo and Miss Limo, who supposedly made an emergency landing in Jeju, fell in love and with this beautiful island, and stayed in the cave where they showcase their unique culture. The artwork by Jason Krugman, which recreates the spiral shape of DNA, is displayed outside the cave.
Bruce Munro’s <Oreum> is at the farthest spot, but is worth the walk up. Its performance of light, representing the Oreums located all over Jeju, is truly an astonishing sight. Last but not least, the cabin by sculptor Tom Fruin is another artwork worth looking at. This colorful cabin, in stark contrast with the black pond, creates a dreamy atmosphere.

Jeju Garden of Light is Jeju’s most famous nighttime attraction, where you can enjoy a romantic nighttime atmosphere from sunset to midnight. When night falls on Jeju Sculpture Park, the forest begins to play a fantastic symphony. A feast of light and art illuminating the night sky is a calming, comforting sight during a night walk. Its charm is completely different from the brightly sunlit midday forest and beckons visitors with its serene beauty.
The night forest full of stars feels even more magical with every step. Passing through the stone wall tunnel with red lamps hanging from the sky, you can see a herd of buffalo crossing the field. The water buffaloes under the bright lights create a scene that makes you feel like you’re on another world. Beyond the herd of buffaloes, a whale roams the forest. The whale, twinkling as if it is made of stars, feels like a painting given life. As you walk along the forest path, following by the buffaloes, sculptures appear one by one, like hidden jewels. Artworks between rocks or beneath trees, expressing the souls of their creators, seem to shine brighter even than the lights. Along the walkway, visitors can see various artworks such as a statue of a mother holding her baby, or a goddess of earth represented by stacks of stones.
If it’s before sunset, a walk up to the observatory is highly recommended. The observatory built on a hill in the forest, with its 360-degree glass windows, offers a panoramic view of the scenery. With the Sanbangsan Mountain standing tall in front of you and Hallasan Mountain at your back, the observatory provides the absolutely best view in the town. The scenery of the sculpture park and the moonlit night above the deer statue also create a romantic atmosphere. The interior is beautifully decorated, which makes it a perfect place for taking pictures. After the night walk, enjoy the last of your Jeju memories at the local coffee shop, “Muhly Garden,” over a coffee or beer. Your night at the forest of Jeju is one you’ll cherish for life.

Surprise Theme Park, located in the eastern part of Jeju, exhibits unique and exotic junk art. Junk Art is a new concept of art utilizing abandoned waste resources, and Surprise Theme Park prides itself on being the world’s largest junk art gallery. In particular, there are many works that utilize abandoned materials such as auto parts. Although recycling is the main subject here, the work is beyond most people’s imaginations. Even the smallest parts in the artwork are impressively elaborate and delicate. The park shows artworks on various themes such as <Transformers>, characters in movies and cartoons, and dinosaurs like those from Jurassic Park.
At night, the junk artworks attract the eye even more. Each piece is illuminated with colorful lighting, which makes the artworks look even more full of life than in the daytime. The Transformers and movie heroes lined up in a row look so lifelike that it feels they could start moving any minute. The huge Dolhareubang looks like as if it is about to raise its massive body, and the silver spaceship also feels as if it’s about to launch into the sky. The 12-meter high Dolhareubang, which contains car parts from 26 cars, is a blockbuster work that took three years to make. At night, its body emits light that adds to its mystique.
At Surprise Theme Park, you can actually touch and personally engage with the displayed artworks. Junk art shows its true value when you take a closer look and fully experience it. The closer you look at the dinosaur's teeth made with nails, and the lion's muscles made by welding nuts, the more you’ll appreciate their beauty. Watching closely, time might just fly even before you notice. The video experience center inside the theme park is also a must-see. The center provides a lot of content worth seeing, such as media art, crystal light experience, and Iron Man experience. As you leave the site, you’ll be treated to a parade of lights. From beginning to end, the park never fails to reveal captivating sights.
