Must Visit on Any Summer TripThe Jeju Beaches and Beach Festivals

What’s an island vacation without a trip to the beach? From sunbathing to swimming and sandcastles to surfing, a day by the sea is one of the true highlights of summer. Jeju has over eleven beaches, which means visitors to the island have a wide selection to choose from. There’s the bright white sand and turquoise seas found at Hyeopjae and Hamdeok. These pristine strips of coast are popular spots for relaxing. Families love these beaches due to the calm and shallow seas that children can play in. For something a bit more dramatic, head to the golden sand and steep cliffs of Jungmun Saekdal Beach. Here, tourists mingle with locals and surfers alike at one of the island’s most popular spots. Try out Hwasun or Hamo Beach for other golden shore adventures. Alternatively, for a uniquely Jeju experience, visit the dark-black sands of Samyang Beach. This strip of the Jeju coastline was created from volcanic rock. In this article, we’ll look at three top Jeju beaches, as well as some of the unique festivals they host. We’ll also provide more information about opening times in summer.

Jungmun Saekdal Beach

Jungmun Saekdal Beach is a vast expanse of sand located within the Jungmun Tourist Complex. For those staying at one of the area’s resorts, it’s a must-visit location. The beach provides plenty of photo opportunities due to its golden sand, tree-covered cliffs, and the waves crashing in from the East Sea. These waves also make Jungmun Beach a popular surfing spot. In fact, the largest international surfing competition in Korea is held on the beach in June every year.

Samyang Black Sand Beach

Samyang’s black sand—formed from basalt rocks created from volcanic eruptions—will change your perspective of what a beach can be. While it may look different, the sand is still very fine, which makes it suitable for children to play in. It has a high concentration of iron and is said to be an effective treatment for various ills including arthritis and neuralgia. Visitors can take advantage of these healing properties by “sand bathing,” an activity that sees participants buried in the sand to relax and cure their body. Samyang Beach is also a popular spot for water sports, especially windsurfing. If you want something more relaxing, there are plenty of cafes nearby offering a variety of refreshments. The beach is located just outside the city and is easy to access by public transport.

Hamdeok Beach

Hamdeok Beach is a short bus journey from Jeju City. Visitors are treated to pure white sand and turquoise water. Next to the beach is Seoubong Peak, a picturesque volcanic cone that you can walk up. The peak offers spectacular views out over the sand, sea, and surrounding area. When you begin to feel hungry, there is an abundance of restaurants and coffee shops on the street lining the beach. There’s also a campsite nearby if you want to experience the joys of falling asleep to the sounds of the waves. Alternatively, there are plenty of hotels in the area—many of which have fantastic sea views.

Beach Festivals

There’s much more to Jeju’s beaches than sunbathing and swimming. Throughout the summer they play host to a variety of festivals. Here are some long-running events that typically occur during summer in Jeju. Dates and schedules for the 2020 line-up are still to be confirmed.

Stepping Stone Festival

Stepping Stone is a music festival held every year in July on Hamdeok Beach. The festival puts on a variety of bands from genres including indie, rock, reggae, punk, and ska. While most of the performers are from Korea, groups from Japan and Hong Kong are also known to attend. 2020 will see the festival enter its 17th year and it is now a two-day event. The organizers haven’t yet confirmed when the 2020 festival will be. However, you can keep up to date via the link below.

3. Events & Festivals
Samyang Black Sand Beach Festival

Samyang Black Sand Beach Festival has been held every year since 2002. The festival features activities including sand sculptures, beach soccer for children, windsurfing, and sand bathing. There are also performances by local residents.

3. Events & Festivals
Iho Taewoo Festival

Iho Taewoo Festival is an event dedicated to a type of traditional Jeju sea raft called “Taewoo.” The festival is held in late July and features performances, fishing experiences, food and drink, and raft demonstrations.

3. Events & Festivals
Jeju Beach Night Opening

During the summer months, Jeju’s beaches come to life as the facilities open. Depending on which beach you head to, this could include lifeguards, shower facilities, beach umbrella and chair rentals, and outlets for food and drink. Some of Jeju’s most popular beaches—usually Hyeopjae, Iho, Samyang, and Hamdeok—stay open until 9 p.m. so visitors can enjoy themselves late into the evening. This typically happens from mid-July until mid-August.
