Banish Your Winter BluesWhere to Add Vibrant Color to Your <Winter Jeju Trip>

Winter typically has a bleak image. As the nights get longer and the leaves fall off trees during fall, it can be tempting to take your cue from the animal kingdom and spend the colder months hibernating. But if you did that on Jeju, you’d miss out on a season full of vibrant colors. During the coldest time of year, small enclaves of brightness pop up around the island, offering those willing to hunt them down the opportunity for beautiful days out amidst nature. Here are four places that will add some color to your Jeju trip during winter.

Pop Out PlantsRed: Camellia Flowers

Camellias bloom during winter on Jeju. The flowers come in various shades of red and pink, which makes them pop out from the green bushes they grow on. They can be seen in parks and gardens around the island, warming the hearts of those who seek them out. Camellia Hill in the south of Jeju, is a popular place to see the flowers. While the park showcases different plants year-round, in winter camellias are the main event. Camellia Hill has around 6,000 camellia plants of 500 varieties from 80 different countries. The event typically starts in mid-November and runs until January. Beyond the flowers, the park also has a cafe where you can buy refreshments and souvenirs.

A Colorful (and Delicious) Winter TreatOrange: Mandarins

Jeju is home to several different species of mandarins and citrus fruits. They typically grow in groves across the island in winter. You can spot them by looking for fields of trees around ten feet tall, decorated with bauble-like orange fruit. A popular activity on the island is to head to a mandarin farm and spend time picking your own fruit. The abundance of produce means that even during busy periods, you won’t struggle to come away with more than you can eat. Hahyo Village is an excellent spot to pick mandarins and take part in related experiences. Here, you can learn how to make mandarin tarts, and a type of popped-rice Korean snack called gwazeul. Mandarin harvest begins in late October and lasts through January, with November being the best time to pick them. Other experiences can be done throughout the year. The area even has restaurants where you can try Korean staples with a citrus twist. The village is located on Olle Trail 6, which is a short drive from Seogwipo and near to Soesokkak Estuary, a popular seaside destination.

A Striking LandscapeGreen: Jeju Tea Fields

Fields full of the curved lines of green tea bushes are a distinctive landscape well-worth tracking down at any time of year. The plants are evergreen and are ready to harvest at the start of spring, making winter a great time to see them. On Jeju, there are several places where you can see green tea fields, the most popular for tourists being the Osulloc tea field in Seogwang-ri. This tea field was cultivated in 1984 and is also home to a cafe and a tea museum. Here, the green tea fields stretch out across the surrounding countryside—making it a great spot to take photos. On clear days you can see the peak of Hallasan Mountain, which in winter is often covered in pristine white snow. In the shop, you can buy green tea in a variety of flavors. The cafe sells traditional tea, as well as a variety of other drinks, cakes, and ice creams that make use of the ingredient in interesting ways.

Jeju’s Winter WonderlandWhite: Snow Covered Fields

While it does snow on Jeju, it rarely sticks around for long in Jeju City or other coastal areas. Nonetheless, if you’re willing to travel to a higher altitude, you have a great chance of seeing snow during a Jeju trip. The summit of Hallasan Mountain, for example, is typically covered with snow throughout the season and is an excellent attraction for the adventurous among us. The good news if you don’t fancy the climb is that you may not have to get out your hiking boots and crampons to see snow. The 1100 Highlands Rest Area is a space at the highest point of the road that goes from the west side of Jeju City on the north of the island, to Jungmun on the south. It passes over Hallasan Mountain, and its 1,100-meter altitude means the area is frequently covered in snow during winter. The number 240 bus stops at the rest area, so it is easy to get to even if you don’t have a car.
