There’s nothing like a steaming soup or stew to warm you up after a day ㅑiiㅑof winter sightseeing. The first taste of the hot broth instantly takes away the cold, leaving behind only the memories of a wonderful trip. On Jeju, there are many different types of hot soups and stews you can try. As an island, seafood features heavily in this list and many local favorites are made with fish and shellfish. Although, there are plenty of dishes without seafood too. Here are four places to try hot soups and stews on Jeju.

Cutlassfish SoupNegeori Restaurant


Negeori Restaurant is a seafood restaurant in the center of Seogwipo. It specializes in dishes cooked with cutlassfish—a type of fish found in the waters around Jeju. The body of the fish is long, thin, and has succulent white meat. Negeori Restaurant serves the fish in several ways. One of the most popular is galchiguk, which is a type of soup with a clear salty broth that also contains vegetables such as cabbage and pumpkin. Other favorites include a spicy cutlassfish stew called galchijorim, grilled cutlassfish, and various other seafood dishes. Each meal also comes with a selection of delicious side dishes. The restaurant’s location in the center of Seogwipo makes it an easy spot for anyone staying in the area to get to. It has around 100 seats and it’s possible to reserve a table in advance, making it a good choice for groups. A meal at the restaurant can also be combined with a day trip to nearby sites such as Cheonjiyeon Waterfall, Jeongbang Waterfall, and Saeyeongyo Bridge. Seogwipo Olle Market is a short walk from the restaurant and well worth a trip.

Spicy Seafood SoupSamseonghyeol Haemultang


Samseonghyeol Haemultang is a small restaurant chain that specializes in a seafood soup called haemultang. The dish is visually impressive as it is stacked full of different types of shellfish, octopus, and crab. The soup is cooked in front of you in a spicy broth which makes it the perfect feast for a cold winter evening. Once you’ve finished most of the seafood, the dish is then finished off by cooking ramyeon noodles in the remaining broth. Haemultang comes in four sizes which serve from two to five people, making it a good choice for even larger groups. The chain also sells other seafood dishes including abalone soup, grilled mackerel, and raw sliced abalone. The brand has three locations, one in Jeju City, one in Dodu-dong which is just west of Jeju City near the airport, and one in Seogwipo near the World Cup Stadium. Each location is open from morning till late, which makes them easy to fit into your trip whether you are on the south or the north of the island. The Jeju City branch has space for around 100 people.

Fresh from the SeaYongduam Haechon


Yongduam Haechon is a seafood restaurant situated on the Yongduam coast in Jeju City. It serves a variety of seafood dishes including plenty of warming soups. Highlights include abalone ttukbaegi, which is a kind of spicy steaming abalone hotpot served in an earthenware bowl, and seongge miyeokguk, which is a hearty, salty soup made from seaweed and sea urchins. As you’d expect, each dish comes with a variety of delicious sides. The restaurant is large and has space for 70 people, making it good for groups. Attractions such as Yongduam Rock and the Yongduam Coastal Road are close. It’s also on coastal walking path Olle Trail 17 so is an excellent place to stop if you need a break during your hike. The airport is nearby so you could easily fit in a visit as either your first or last meal on Jeju.

Chicken Shabu ShabuSeongmi Garden


Seongmi Garden specializes in chicken shabu shabu. This is a type of hot pot in which a boiling broth is placed in the center of the table. Diners fill the pot with fresh vegetables, before adding thinly sliced chicken breast. As the meat is thin it cooks in seconds, resulting in a tender slice of meat that you can then dip in sauce. After you’ve finished the shabu shabu, the restaurant brings out the rest of the chicken. This time it has been cooked in a soup with rice. The final course is mung bean chicken juk, which is a kind of rice and mung bean porridge. Seongmi Garden has space for around 130 diners making it a good option for groups as long as you book a table in advance. Its Jocheon location means it is only around 30 minutes from Jeju City.
