Nowadays, vegetarianism has become part of the mainstream.

More and more people are avoiding meat and animal products in their diets. They do so for many reasons, including for their health, ethics, and/or to help protect the environment.

There are various types of vegetarians, including vegans (those who avoid all animal and animal-derived products); lacto-ovo vegetarians (those who avoid all animal flesh, but do consume dairy and egg products); lacto vegetarians (those who avoid animal flesh and eggs, but do consume dairy products); and ovo vegetarians (avoid all animal products except eggs).

In Korea, “vegetarian culture” actively formed with singer Lee Hyo-ri and actress Lee Hanee declaring that they avoid eating meat. Now, this has expanded to include “lifestyle” choices in such areas as cosmetics (no animal testing) and fashion (no leather or fur).

In Jeju, in line with this social atmosphere, vegetarian/vegan restaurants and bakeries using only vegetables as ingredients have popped up one by one.

However, one of the things that vegan tourists still complain about here is the lack of dietary options. It is true that there have been restaurants which mistakenly identified themselves as vegetarian/vegan based on the simplistic notion that menu items “without meat” would qualify.

As such, it was difficult to find separate vegetarian or vegan menus in typical restaurants and cafes in Jeju, and people with allergies could not help but fear for their well-being because they could not be sure of the ingredients used in the menu items they ordered.

A movement to overcome these difficulties has now taken hold on Jeju Island, and the bilingual vegetarian/vegan map published here has been painstakingly compiled by a civic group called “Jeju Vegan”.

The map below includes information on Jeju businesses such as vegan restaurants, restaurants offering vegan options, bakeries, and cafes. It provides detailed information on various vegetarian/vegan-related businesses in Jeju, in both Korean and English.

The restaurants and cafes listed are not just because they are vegetarian, but there are many places that are already famous for their gourmet offerings, so even if you are not vegan, you should consider giving them a try.
