As the largest five-day market in Korea, Jeju Traditional 5-Day Market has nearly 1,000 stalls offering different goods. Full of the old sentiment, it is the market that best represents the life of Jeju locals and opens on days that end with a 2 or 7. When this grand-scale market opens, the place becomes busy, bustling with visitors.

The market is full of various items such as things to see, eat, and buy, and you can get a glimpse of the vibrant and lively traditional market.  While it is a place for local Jeju residents to shop, it is a must-visit spot to include in one’s trip to Jeju, so it’s always crowded with tourists.

There is a special marketplace inside the Jeju Traditional 5-Day Market called Halmang Marketplace, which is for merchants who are 65 or older.  Halmang means grandma in Jeju dialect.  Old women sell various agricultural products they produced at the space they were provided free of charge. Since the marketplace becomes crowded with people, it is equipped with a public parking lot and various convenient facilities.  The old look of the market has been replaced with modern appearances, but it is still a place of warmth and generosity.

If the Jeju Traditional 5-Day Market, introduced earlier, is a place that attracts many tourists as well as Jeju locals, Hallim Traditional 5-Day Market is a place crowded with residents of Hallim-eup.  It also has a fun nickname, Hallim Joktre Market.  Joktre is a word in Jeju dialect that means near or close, so it means a market that is nearby.

It is small in size, but it offers everything that the locals look for from daily necessities to farming tools to clothing.  Nestled in an area where agriculture and fishery are developed, you will find a blacksmith who beats iron to make agricultural tools and located near Hallim Port, you can also purchase fresh seafood caught on the day at a low price.

Why don’t you look around the restaurants to fill your empty stomach and slowly walk around the market to discover hidden gems?

Full of warmth and generosityHamdeok Fork 5-Day Market

Although Hamdeok Fork 5-Day Market is a modest-sized market, it has its pleasantly simple charm. It is a place where you can observe the austere lifestyle of the locals.

About 40 shops sell clothing, agricultural and fishery products, hardware, and food essential for everyday life. As written on the signboard at the entrance of the market, it is a place where you can feel the warmth and generosity of the merchants.  You may enter the market empty-handed, but by the time you leave, you will see your hands full of new things.

Since it’s a market that opens up in a quiet village, the merchants wrap up their business around 2 PM. If you would like to experience a lively market, make sure to hurry and visit in the morning.

Sehwa Haenyeo Traditional 5-Day Market located nearby the coastal walkway in Sehwa has about 150 stores inside.  The sculpture of a haenyeo will welcome you at the entrance of the market.  First organized in 1912 at Byeolbangjin in Hado-ri, Gujwa-eup, Sehwa Haenyeo Traditional 5-Day Market is where the haenyeo gathered their strength to host a large-scale anti-Japanese movement.

The market opens on days that end with a 5 or 0, and the biggest appeal is that you can shop right next to the beautiful Sehwa Beach. During the summer, the tourists who came for the beach make a visit to the market. You can see the entire market at a glance, and you can look around various items in every corner of the market.
